DESCRIPTION:We first consider the set of commuting pairs in a group or an 
 algebra and related properties.&nbsp\; We want to measure how big this set
  is in various senses.&nbsp\; We will also discuss some recent work on var
 iations of this theme.&nbsp\; We also will discuss some properties of grou
 ps that can be determined by considering pairs of elements (e.g. whether a
  group is abelian) and some probabilistic aspects of these problems.
