DESCRIPTION:Since its formulation in 1971\, the McKay conjecture has influ
enced the direction of the representation theory of finite groups. In 2008
the conjecture was reduced to checking that simple groups satisfy the so
called inductive McKay condition. This condition is now influencing not on
ly the study of characters of simple groups\, but character theory in gene
ral. We give an overview of this and related problems.
