DESCRIPTION:Real-world systems in sociology often consist of a large numbe
r of interacting individuals that may form patterns or develop a collectiv
e behaviour\; opinion formation in a society is a typical application. Mat
hematical techniques originating from kinetic theory can be successfully a
dapted to model such systems and obtain mesoscopic and macroscopic descrip
tions of the microscopic dynamics. Such approaches frequently lead to gene
ralisations of the classical Boltzmann equation for gas dynamics and assoc
iated limit Fokker-Planck type partial differential equations. In this tal
k I will discuss different kinetic models for opinion formation\, modellin
g phenomena like opinion leadership\, political segregation and pre-electi
 on polling.
