DESCRIPTION:Our departmental seminar series\, Bigger Picture T
alks\, runs throughout the academic year\, invitin
g thought-leaders from across the world driving si
gnificant advances in our impact areas of energy\,
health and sustainability to share and discuss th
eir work with us.\n\nIn this talk\, Professor Wood
s will outline some of the challenges associated w
ith decarbonisation of the energy system\, explori
ng both supply and demand\, including the intermit
tency of renewable supply\, the fluctuations in bo
th daily and seasonal energy demand\, and the poss
ible role of geological hydrogen and carbon storag
 e. He will then focus on the decarbonisation of he
ating systems\, with a case study of St Johns Coll
ege\, including opportunities for energy efficienc
y\, the design of air\, ground and river heat pump
systems\, and upgrading building fabric. He will
consider the implications of scaling up such appro
aches\, for example across the UK\, and their impa
ct on net zero.\n\n*Speaker bio*\n\nProfessor Andy
Woods works in fluid mechanics of energy and the
environment\, with expertise in multiphase flow in
 cluding : volcanic eruption dyamics\, geological c
arbon storage\, geothermal power generation\; buil
ding energy and ventilation\, and geophysical flui
d dynamics\, including flow in porous media. He he
ads up the BP Institute in University of Cambridge
\, where he has worked since 2000. He has publishe
d over 200 papers on the above topics.\n\n"Please
