DESCRIPTION:CamRuSS has prepared a real present for lovers of modern Russi
an literature. On Friday 29 April we'll hold a meeting with Grigorii Chkha
rtishvili\, one of the most celebrated writers of post-Soviet Russia\, who
is known around the world under his pen name "Boris Akunin":https://en.wi
 kipedia.org/wiki/%D0%91%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%81_%D0%90%D0%BA%D1%83%D0%BD%D
0%B8%D0%BD.\n\nIn the first two decades of the twenty-first century\, Chkh
artishvili published over sixty books. His series featuring the tsarist se
cret policeman Erast Fandorin has sold over 20 million books in Russia alo
ne\, making Akunin one of the bestselling authors of the post-Soviet era.
Combining intertextuality\, allusions\, pastiche\, and other markers of po
stmodern playfulness\, many of Akunin's works have been translated into En
glish and have also been adapted for film and television.\n\nChkhartishvil
i is also known as a prominent critic of the Russian authorities\, Vladimi
r Putin in particular\, and was one of the leaders of the 2011-12 protests
in Moscow. He emigrated from Russia in 2014 in the wake of the annexation
of Crimea\, and now spends most of his time abroad.\n\nFor the last ten y
ears\, Grigorii Chkhartishvili has focused on his big project\, "The Histo
ry of the Russian State"\, which\, he claims\, is "non-ideological"\, base
d solely on facts. Each of the nine volumes is accompanied by a book of fi
ction set in the same period\, where numerous allusions to modern Russia a
re easily recognisable. No wonder that the topic of our conversation with
the author is "Russia: Its Past\, Present and Future".\n\nOur conversation
with Boris Akunin will be led by Dr Jana Howlett\, "Emerita Lecturer in S
lavonic Studies at the University of Cambridge":https://www.mmll.cam.ac.uk
/jrh11 and "Emerita Fellow of Jesus College":https://www.jesus.cam.ac.uk/p
eople/jana-howlett. Jana is a historian specialising in medieval and moder
n Russian art and culture.\n\nAll proceeds will be split between the fundr
 aising campaign "Настоящая Россия":https://truerussia.org/
("True Russia Against the War") and our own charity's new dedicated fund t
o provide targeted help for those fleeing the war in Ukraine and their hos
 t families.\n\n*WHEN:* Friday 29 April\, 18:00 – 20:00\n\n*WHERE:* Paula
