DESCRIPTION:A talk on developing a network around 'the arts' i
n Algeria\, with the aim of connecting scholars in
Algeria\, Europe and North America\, and providin
g support and opportunities for Algerian artists\,
  including actors\, writers\, filmmakers\, musicia
 ns\, visual artists etc.\n\nResearch on Algeria\,
and general understandings of the country within t
he Anglophone world\, have tended to focus upon mo
ments of conflict and violence: in particular\, Fr
ench colonialism (1830-1962)\, the War of Independ
ence (1954-1962)\, and the so-called ‘Black Decade
’ (or ‘Civil War’) of the 1990s (1991-2002). Far l
ess attention has been paid to the arts and artist
ic creativity\, both historical and contemporary\,
within North Africa and among the Algerian diaspo
ra.\n\nDr Stephen Wilford (University of Cambridge
& Wolfson College) shares insights into the netwo
rks being collaboratively developed around the art
s in Algeria. This new network seeks to redress th
e balance\, refocusing attention on artistry and c
reativity\, and creating connections between pract
itioners and scholars working on the Arts and Huma
nities in Algeria. While the arts in Algeria have
undoubtedly been shaped\, and commented upon\, by
the social and political milieux from which they e
merge\, creativity has also offered a form of resi
lience.\n\nIn this talk\, he explores the place of
‘the arts’ (broadly conceived) within contemporar
y Algerian societies\, and the ways in which artis
 ts (actors\, writers\, filmmakers\, musicians\, vi
sual artists\, etc.) have shaped Algerian culture.
He also sketches out the aims and objectives of t
he new network\, highlighting some of the ways in
which it is intended to grow links between scholar
ship and artistic practice\, in Algeria and global
ly.\n\n\nResearch on Algeria\, and general underst
andings of the country within the Anglophone world
