DESCRIPTION:This is based on a joint work with Helge Dietert. I will discu
ss the problem of hypocoercivity when the rate of collisions depends on th
e spatial variable\, and the connection of this problem to control theory.
In a recent work with Helge Dietert we have been focussing on the problem
of finding the spatially dependent jump rate which maximises the rate of
convergence to equilibrium. I will discuss our results for the simple Gold
stein-Taylor model and our hopes for more complicated models. I will try a
nd end with discussing a number of out unanswered problems\, so come along
and so you can tell me what you think the answers are!
