DESCRIPTION:Microglia are the tissue resident macrophages of the CNS with
typical macrophage properties such as innate immune functions and phagocyt
ic activity. They also possess specific CNS-tailored functions such as syn
aptic pruning and neuronal support. Microglia express a specific transcrip
tional profile reflective of their CNS macrophage function. In recent year
s\, several studies have elucidated the changes that occur in microglia in
the context of development and CNS disease. With the emergence of single
cell sequencing to deep phenotype individual cells\, novel findings regard
ing the role of microglia in human CNS development\, homeostasis\, and dis
 ease will be presented.
