DESCRIPTION:Gaia-ESO is a large public spectroscopic survey performed with
  the instrument FLAMES on the ESO VLT. With its 340 observing nights\, Gai
 a-ESO remains so far the largest stellar spectroscopic programme carried-o
 ut on a 8m-class telescope. The project started ten years ago and is very 
 close to completion.\n\nIn this talk I will review the Survey motivation\,
  strategy and implementation\, present science highlights\, and discuss th
 e legacy aspects.
