DESCRIPTION:Since being pioneered by Efron (1979) and introduc
ed to phylogenetics by Felsenstein (1985)\, non-pa
rametric bootstrapping has been widely used in sta
tistics and statistical phylogenetics to generate
measures of statistical uncertainty. Less widely a
dopted is Felsenstein's (1988) suggestion to use p
arametric bootstrapping (or more generally\, simul
ation) to assess variability in estimates. Here I
give a brief description of bootstrapping in phylo
 genetics\, including some associated controversies
\, describe the general framework of parametric bo
otstrapping and provide some examples from tree in
ference and ancestral sequence reconstruction to d
 emonstrate its flexibility and power.
