DESCRIPTION:Yuri Gagarin conducted the first human spaceflight
  in April 1961. His success and personality won hi
 m admirers around the world\, including the thousa
 nds in Britain who welcomed him to these shores la
 ter that year. But Gagarin’s flight only happened 
 once preceding missions with dogs were safely retu
 rned to Earth from orbit. This talk looks at the S
 oviet space heroes of 1961\, canine and human\, an
 d the fame of Gagarin as he visited London and Man

 out the speaker\n\nDoug Millard is Deputy Keeper T
 echnologies and Engineering. He has produced many 
 space exhibitions\, written articles\, papers and 
 books including a history of the Black Arrow satel
 lite launch vehicle and its engines\, lectured wid
 ely and appeared on television and radio. In 2006 
 he gained his MSc in the History of Science\, Tech
 nology and Medicine at the University of London. I
 n April 2012 he co-organised with the UK Space Age
 ncy a conference held at the Science Museum to mar
 k the 50th anniversary of the Ariel 1 satellite. H
 e was senior curator for the ‘Cosmonauts: Birth of
  the Space Age’ exhibition (2015) and editor of th
 e associated publication. His book ‘Satellite: Inn
 ovation in Orbit’ was published by Reaktion Books 
 early 2017. In 2016 he curated the acquisition and
  display of the Soyuz TMA-19M descent module – use
 d by Tim Peake\, Yuri Malenchenko and Tim Kopra du
 ring their mission to and from the International S
 pace Station\, 2015-16 – along with the associated
  virtual reality experience Space Descent VR. In 2
 019 he organised the Culture Space research progra
 mme of three workshops that investigated new ways 
 of representing space exploration in the museum ga
 llery. In 2020 he contributed to a BBC Radio 4 pro
 gramme on the life of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. He i
 s currently developing with colleagues a major res
 earch programme on global perspectives of space ex
 ploration that will inform development of a new sp
 ace gallery at the Science Museum later this decad
