DESCRIPTION:Despite being widely regarded by commentators as a
dvocating cultural and religious diversity due to
its ideological indebtedness to reformist and huma
nist thought and its largely flattering portrayal
of Ottoman Constantinople\, the anonymous Renaissa
nce dialogue known as Viaje de Turquía is neverthe
less reliant upon antisemitic stereotypes to facil
itate the development of its plot and central char
acters. The analysis that forms the basis of this
presentation addresses the conspicuous gap in our
current understanding of this seminal example of
Spanish Renaissance literature by scrutinising the
crucial parallels it draws between two situations
presented as broadly analogous: Christ’s persecut
ion at the hands of the Pharisees and his subseque
nt crucifixion by the Roman imperial authorities\,
and the hero’s mistreatment by Sephardi physician
s and the constant threat of execution held over h
im by the Ottomans. A fundamental aim of this stud
y is therefore to challenge and ultimately alter s
cholarly perceptions of a text widely acclaimed fo
r its espousal of Renaissance humanist ideals\, an
d\, by extension\, to underscore the fact that tho
se ideals were by no means unanimously concerned w
ith achieving harmonious coexistence with the Othe
 r. \n\nDr Şizen Yiacoup lectures on Spanish cultur
al history at the University of Liverpool. Her tea
ching and research interests lie mainly in the way
s in which the memory of conflict and cross-cultur
al exchange between Muslims\, Christians and Jews
is preserved in the literature of late medieval an
d early modern Spain. Her most recent research pro
ject explores the significance of antisemitism in
the anonymous sixteenth-century dialogue known as
Viaje de Turquía.\n\nThis event will be held onlin
