 sF1S9\n\n*ABSTRACT*\n\nRus *_tol’ko_* and Chn *_zh
iyou_* share an aggregate of properties that set t
hem apart from English *_only_*. The former two mu
st be immediately adjacent to their focalized asso
ciate in contrast to English\, where focus associa
tion can be discontinuous. I aspire to show that t
his adjacency requirement is a consequence of synt
actic focus movement\, triggered by a strong [Foc]
feature. The movement of this type results in rig
ht-adjunction of an F-marked constituent to *_only
_*\, yielding an appropriately local feature-check
ing configuration. Rus/Chn *_only_* itself is limi
ted to a handful of positions within the structure
. Specifically\, it must meet two requirements in
order to merge successfully. First\, *_only_* adjo
ins strictly to functional projections. Second\, t
hese functional projections themselves must also b
e phases. Ultimately\, the goal is to demonstrate
that *_only_* can adjoin to vP\, CP and FP: i.e. p
hasal functional projections in the verbal\, claus
al and nominal domains. Theoretical implications o
f this treatment are then discussed.
