DESCRIPTION:Effective field theory provides a way of parameter
izing strong-field deviations from General Relativ
ity that might be observable in the gravitational
waves emitted in a black hole merger. To perform n
umerical simulations of mergers in such theories i
t is necessary that the equations be written in a
form that admits a well-posed initial value formul
ation. In this talk\, I will focus on gravity coup
led to a scalar field including the leading (4-der
ivative) effective field theory corrections (this
 includes the so-called Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonn
et theory). I will explain how a new class of "mod
ified harmonic" gauges and gauge-fixing procedures
can be used to write the equations of motion of t
his theory in a form that\, at weak coupling\, adm
its a well-posed initial value problem. I will con
clude by discussing possible applications to numer
 ical relativity.
