DESCRIPTION:The unprecedented increase of data in biology in recent times
has resulted in massive opportunities for data scientists to make new disc
overies. But analyzing and applying computation to data is simply not enou
gh. There is a need for theories to convert this data into new knowledge.
The talk will be about the importance of mathematical theories in biology\
; how they have played a surprisingly pivotal role in biology\, and how th
ey are needed to make the most of the accumulating data. The talk will inc
lude a history of biology\, and an overview of the Hodgkin-Huxley model\,
a beautiful theory that explains how our nerve cells\, the neurons work.
