DESCRIPTION:How do digital security and privacy interact with various LGBT
Q plus communities and how do those communities view and interact with dig
ital systems in the connected world? There is no single answer to this que
stion as it depends greatly on the demographics of what makes up a communi
ty\, including age\, economic status\, and cultural background. The rules
of interaction in digital spaces\, and the expectations that people can ha
ve about both digital security are defined by those who create and maintai
n the platforms that people use to interact every day\, whether that's on
social media\, or the now ubiquitous app culture. The intersection of digi
tal security and privacy with LGBTQ plus communities is the topic of this
talk\, which will show how the systems we build affect the members of the
communities that use these systems.\n\nBio:\nGeorge V. Neville-Neil is an
industrial visitor at the Computer Laboratory and works on networking and
operating system code\nfor fun and profit. He also teaches courses on vari
ous subjects related to programming. His areas of interest are code spelun
king\, operating systems\, networking and time protocols. He is the co-aut
hor with Marshall Kirk McKusick and Robert N. M. Watson of The Design and
Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System. For over fifteen years he
has been the columnist better known as Kode Vicious. He earned his bachelo
r’s degree in computer science at Northeastern University in Boston\, Ma
ssachusetts\, and is a member of ACM\, the Usenix Association\, and IEEE.
He is an avid bicyclist and traveler who currently lives with his husband
 in New York City.
