SUMMARY:Computational methods for exceptional groups - Ad

DESCRIPTION:This talk will contain no new algorithms or method
s for computation in groups. Instead\, I will desc
ribe my (ab)using of existing algorithms (in Magma
) to help study the structure of exceptional algeb
raic groups\, their Lie algebras and the exception
al finite groups of Lie type. Such computational m
ethods have guided me and often formed part of the
argument in lots of my work\, including joint pro
jects with Tim Burness\, Alastair Litterick and Da
vid Stewart.
These applications have inc
luded representation theory\, especially calculati
ng cohomology groups\, intersection of subgroups a
nd construction of subgroups. The talk will includ
e many open-ended (and impossible-to-answer) quest
ions about the finite groups of Lie type machinery
and related algorithms\, which will hopefully be
helpful to other users in the audience.
