DESCRIPTION:Come to the Winstanley Lecture Hall on 23rd January at 6 pm to
hear from Prof Kevin Anderson\, Professor of Energy and Climate Change at
Universities of Manchester and Uppsala\, and the former Director of the T
yndall Centre for Climate Change Research.\n\nProfessor Anderson engages w
idely across all tiers of EU\, UK\, and Swedish governments on issues rang
ing from shale gas\, aviation and shipping to the role of integrated asses
sment models in climate science\, carbon budgets and ‘negative emission
technologies’. His analysis previously contributed to the framing of the
UK’s Climate Change Act and the development of national carbon budgets.
\n\nTo reach Winstanley Lecture Hall\, enter the door opposite to the Grea
t Gate\, go up the stairs to your right\, and take the second left turn. Y
ou will find our banner near the entrance.\n\n"Peel away the layers of dan
gerously naïve hope and unfounded optimism and the\nmitigation challenge
posed by the Paris Agreement now demands the rapid and\nprofound re-shapin
g of contemporary society. Whilst the models dominating the\nmitigation ag
enda employ evermore exotic and speculative technologies to remain\n‘pol
itically palatable’\, the arithmetic of emissions increasingly embeds eq
uity at the\nheart of any mathematically cogent strategy. Dress it up howe
ver we may like\, the\nParisian mitigation agenda is ultimately a rationin
g issue. Until we are prepared to\nacknowledge this\, we will continue our
reckless pathway towards a 3-5°C future.\nAgainst such a depressing back
drop\, do the rapid emergence of new and vociferous\nconstituencies and th
e heightened profile of climate change suggest early cracks and\nthe prosp
 ect of new light?"
