DESCRIPTION:In the representation theory of finite reductive groups unipot
ent classes play a prominent role. In this talk I will illustrate why this
is the case. Specifically I will present work of Kawanaka and Lusztig and
explain to some extent how these fit together. Examples will be our guide
\, with the focus being on GL_n(q) and Sp_4(q).
