DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will give an introduction to random
ized benchmarking\, a standard experimental techni
que in quantum computing. I will review the reason
s for its existence and the functioning of its sta
ndard 'Clifford group' version from a representati
on theoretical angle. Using this representation th
eory perspective one can see that randomized bench
marking can be generalized to arbitrary finite gro
ups. I will show how to do this in a principled ma
nner and discuss some issues that appear. Finally\
, if there is time\, I will try to give a hint of
how the powerful machinery of harmonic analysis ca
n be applied to guarantee the correct functioning
of randomized benchmarking under very broad experi
 mental conditions.
