DESCRIPTION:It is known that surface energy plays an increasin
gly important role in modeling of objects at nano-
scales. In this talk\, surface energy model propo
sed by Steigmann and Ogden will be applied to frac
ture problems in two-dimensional setting. Introduc
tion of surface energy leads to non-classical boun
dary conditions incorporating both stresses and de
rivatives of displacements. The mechanical problem
will be reduced to systems of singular integro-di
fferential equations which are further reduced to
systems of weakly-singular equations. The existenc
e and uniqueness of the solution will be discussed
. It is shown that taking into account surface mec
hanics leads to the size-dependent solutions. A nu
merical scheme of the solution of the systems of s
ingular integro-differential equations based on B-
splines is suggested\, and the numerical results a
re presented for different values of the mechanica
l and the geometric parameters.
