DESCRIPTION:That “finely-divided metals” have unusual optical properti
es has been known since ancient times. Gold\, for instance\, can appear r
ed\, green\, blue or brown on the nanoscale. In this talk I will describe
synthetic methods to create colloidal gold nanocrystals of tunable size\,
shape\, and therefore tunable optical properties. The structure-directin
g agents in the synthesis are thought to bind to different crystal facets
of the growing nanocrystals and therefore dictate nanocrystal shape: new\
, improved imaging methods are beginning to allow us to see if this is tru
 e. The surface is where the nanocrystals meet and greet the rest of the w
orld\; strategies to coat them isotropically and anisotropically with hard
and soft shells will be discussed.
