DESCRIPTION:Gearset is a fast-growing start-up based on the Science Park i
n Cambridge. In this talk you will see how some early pragmatic developmen
t choices allowed Gearset to grow so rapidly\, as well as how the software
engineers can continue to innovate and improve the product whilst still r
eleasing updates multiple times a day. Using a real-life example Luke and
Ben will explain how major changes can be made behind the scenes to suppor
t the expansion of Gearset whilst minimising the downtime that customers e
xperience.\n\n*Bios:*\n*Ben:* After completing his undergraduate degree an
d PhD in Computer Science at Churchill College\, Ben moved into commercial
software development. Initially with an engineering company for 6 years h
e recently joined Gearset as a Software Engineer and is currently working
on rearchitecting some of the underlying infrastructure that the product r
elies on. \n\n*Luke:* Luke has been working at Gearset for almost 5 years\
, the last 2 of which have been as Head of Engineering. Although he's a so
ftware engineer by background and loves writing code\, most of his time no
wadays goes into making sure the engineering team is focusing on the right
things\, helping the team maintain their velocity\, growing the team to m
atch the needs of the business\, and ensuring our culture stays in place a
s we grow. Before Gearset\, he spent 3 years as a software engineer at Red
gate Software which he joined straight after graduating from the Universit
y of Bristol with an MEng in Computer Science.
