DESCRIPTION:Why do we have vaccines against some diseases but not against
others? Why must the current vaccine we have for influenza require updatin
g every few years\, while a single measles vaccine can protect us for life
? In this talk\, Professor Gupta discusses how we have exploited the theor
etical predictions of a model for influenza evolution to design and produc
e a new “universal” influenza vaccine. She is a Professor of Theoretic
al Epidemiology at the University of Oxford with an interest in infectious
disease agents responsible for malaria\, HIV\, influenza and bacterial me
ningitis. Professor Gupta is also an acclaimed novelist and essayist\, wit
h her fifth novel\, So Good in Black\, was longlisted for the DSC Prize fo
