DESCRIPTION:In numerical ODEs\, there is a rich literature on
methods that preserve certain geometric structures
arising in physical systems\, such as Hamiltonian
 /symplectic structure\, symmetries\, and conservat
ion laws. I will give an introduction to these met
hods and discuss recent work extending some of the
se ideas to numerical PDEs in classical field theo
 ry.
