DESCRIPTION:In numerical ODEs\, there is a rich literature on methods that
preserve certain geometric structures arising in physical systems\, such
 as Hamiltonian/symplectic structure\, symmetries\, and conservation laws.
I will give an introduction to these methods and discuss recent work exten
ding some of these ideas to numerical PDEs in classical field theory.
