DESCRIPTION:Antivirals currently only exist for 9 out of the 2
 19 known human viral diseases\, are virus-specific
and lose efficacy upon viral mutation. A broad-sp
ectrum antiviral\, the equivalent of broad-spectru
m antibiotics\, is needed\, especially in the figh
t against emerging viral outbreaks. Recent work ha
s shown that highly sulfonated nanomaterials act i
n such a broad-spectrum antiviral manner due to mu
ltivalent interactions. This led to us producing t
he first ever fully-organic (sugar based) broad-sp
ectrum virucidal antiviral and most recently synth
etic polymer-based materials that also show broad-
spectrum antiviral properties. These materials wor
k via a newly proposed disruptive binding approach
that effectively 'pops' the viral capsids. Eviden
ce is provided by electron microscopy\, molecular
dynamic simulations and in-vitro\, ex-vivo and in-
vivo assays. My talk will introduce the importance
of developing new antivirals\, highlight the adva
ntages to an extracellular virucidal approach and
give examples of different materials that we have
shown can be produced with such antiviral properti
 es.
