DESCRIPTION:Atomically-thin layers of two-dimensional material
 s can be assembled in vertical stacks held togethe
 r by van der Waals forces\, allowing for coupling 
 between monolayer crystals with incommensurate lat
 tices and arbitrary mutual rotation. A consequence
  of using these degrees of freedom is the emergenc
 e of a periodicity in the local atomic registry of
  the constituent crystal structures\, known as a m
 oiré superlattice. Here\, we discuss the regimes f
 or the formation of moiré SL in bilayers of transi
 tion metal dichalcogenides\, distinguishing betwee
 n the rigid-crystal behavior of the two layers and
  lattice reconstruction into perfect stacking doma
 ins (2H or 3R type\, depending on the orientation 
 of the layers)\, separated by the screw dislocatio
 n networks. For both of these two regimes\, we dis
 cuss the effect of the superlattice on electronic 
 and optical properties of various twisted TMD homo
 - and heterobilayers\, including the tunneling cha
 racteristics\, piezoelectricity effects in the str
 ongly reconstructed bilayers\, flat miniband forma
 tion for holes in twisted heterostructures\, and t
 he SL effects for the excitons.\n
