SUMMARY:The science of saving a species – black-tailed god
wits in the UK - Dr Jen Smart\, RSPB

DESCRIPTION:Find out how we go about discovering the problems
faced by threatened species\, how we are using a r
ange of exciting and novel conservation techniques
to help this species and to hear about progress d
uring the first three years. Project Godwit is a f
ive year project funded by EU Life and the Heritag
 e Lottery Fund. \n\nBlack-tailed godwits are a b
eautiful ground nesting wading bird that are depen
dent on wetlands. With a declining population of f
ewer than 50 breeding pairs\, Project Godwit is an
ambitious RSPB and Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust pr
oject that aims to prevent this species from becom
ing extinct in the UK. Dr Jen Smart is a Principal
Conservation Scientist at the RSPB Centre for Con
servation Science. Her research focuses on the eco
logy of breeding waders and developing conservatio
n solutions to reverse their severe population dec
lines. Increasingly this involves understanding an
d managing the impacts of predation and finding wa
ys to influence landscape-scale management of wet
 grasslands.
