DESCRIPTION:Metamaterials are artificial materials with properties otherwi
se not existing in nature. This is achieved through the design of its cons
tituent building blocks\, which are generally several times smaller than t
he operating wavelength. An interesting route for the fabrication of photo
nic metamaterials is their self-assembly in liquid crystals. Here\, we fir
stly determine the optimal geometrical parameters of a single split ring r
esonator (SRR) colloidal particle in order to achieve the stability of the
2D and 3D SRR structures in liquid crystals using free energy calculation
 s. Then we focus on the optical response of such a composed material\, not
ably the resonances in the transmissivity spectra\, and tunability of opti
cal properties of the SRR colloidal crystal with external fields.
