DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I discuss the connection between th
e typological distribution of word orders in the n
oun phrase\, and cognitive biases active during le
arning. In particular\, I set out two such biases
 – one for structural simplicity\, and one for sema
ntic naturalness – and test how they interact to d
rive the behaviour of adults and children in a ser
ies of artificial language learning experiments. T
he findings across these experiments suggest that
developmental and native language transfer effects
play a role in how new linguistic patterns are le
arned. Nevertheless\, both simplicity and naturaln
ess also shape learning outcomes in a way that ali
gns closely with the typology\, providing a possib
le explanation for the frequency of particular pat
 terns across the world's languages.
