DESCRIPTION:On the evening of 9 May 2019 the Leverhulme Centre
for the Future of Intelligence will hold a public
event on the methodology and ethics of targeting
in the Winstanley Lecture Hall at Trinity College\
 , University of Cambridge.\n\nDescription: Governm
ents and companies can now model and predict the b
eliefs\, preferences\, and behaviour of small grou
ps and even individuals - allowing them to “target
 ” interventions\, messages\, and services much mor
e narrowly. These new forms of targeting present h
uge opportunities to make valuable interventions m
ore effective\, for example by delivering public s
ervices to those most in need of them. However\, t
he use of more fine-grained information about indi
viduals and groups also raises huge risks\, challe
nging key notions of privacy\, fairness\, and auto
nomy. \n\nThis evening event will commence with a
lecture by David Stillwell (University Lecturer in
Data Analytics & Quantitative Social Science and
Deputy Director of the Psychometrics Centre)\, who
will speak about the use of psychometrics in pers
onalised targeting.\n\nThe lecture will be followe
 d by a panel discussion\, including:\n\nDr Nóra Ní
Loideáin (Director and Lecturer in Law of the Inf
ormation Law and Policy Centre at the Institute fo
r Advanced Legal Studies\, University of Cambridge
)\nProfessor Dame Theresa Marteau (Director of Beh
aviour and Health Research Unit\, University of Ca
mbridge)\nDr Jeffrey M. Skopek (Lecturer in Medica
 l Law\, Ethics\, and Policy\, University of Cambri
dge)\nDr Adrian Weller (Senior Research Fellow in
 Machine Learning\, University of Cambridge\, and P
rogramme Director for Artificial Intelligence at T
he Alan Turing Institute)\n\nRegistration is free
and all are welcome!\nThe registration page is her
