DESCRIPTION:Flows in confined spaces that are driven by intern
al buoyancy and\nexternal wind can possess multipl
e steady states. In this talk we\nwill discuss the
robustness of such systems by quantifying their\n
propensity to switch between steady states when th
ey are subjected\nto temporal changes in the wind.
The specific case we consider is\nflow in an `emp
tying filling box'\, consisting of a single volume
\nwith high- and low-level openings\, driven by an
isolated internal\nsource of buoyancy and an oppo
sing wind. By considering the\nsystem's energetics
and phase space\, we explain why the\nventilation
of the resulting stratified system is less suscep
tible\nto being permanently reversed by the wind t
han the ventilation of\na space with uniform buoya
 ncy.
