DESCRIPTION:Ayça Çubukçu will be launching her book\, "For the
Love of Humanity: The World Tribunal on Iraq". \n
\nIn 2003\, the World Tribunal on Iraq (WTI) emerg
ed from the global antiwar movement that had mobil
ized against the invasion and subsequent occupatio
n of Iraq. It sought to document and provide groun
ds for adjudicating war crimes committed by the Un
ited States\, the United Kingdom\, and their allie
d forces during the Iraq war.\n\nFor the Love of H
umanity builds on two years of transnational field
work within the decentralized network of antiwar a
ctivists who constituted the WTI in some twenty ci
ties around the world. Ayça Çubukçu illuminates th
e tribunal up close\, both as an ethnographer and
a sympathetic participant. In the process\, she si
tuates debates among WTI activists - a group encom
 passing scholars\, lawyers\, students\, translator
 s\, writers\, teachers\, and more - alongside key
jurists\, theorists\, and critics of global democr
acy.\n\nThrough critical analysis of the global de
bate surrounding one of the early twenty-first cen
tury's most significant world events\, Ayça addres
ses the challenges of forging global solidarity ag
ainst imperialism and makes a case for reevaluatin
g the relationships between law and violence\, emp
ire and human rights\, and cosmopolitan authority
and political autonomy.\n\n*All welcome to attend*
