DESCRIPTION:Living tissues are intelligent materials that can 
 change their mechanical properties while they deve
 lop. In spite of extensive studies in multiple mod
 el organisms we are only just beginning to underst
 and these dynamic properties and their role in tis
 sue development. Although many tissues are known t
 o exhibit visco-elastic properties\, it is unclear
  which properties dominate three-dimensional shape
  changes of cellular monolayers\, such as epitheli
 a. The inversion process in Volvox serves as model
  system for morphogenetic shape changes of cell sh
 eets. During inversion an initially spherical cell
  sheet gradually adopts a mushroom shape through i
 nwards folding (invagination) at the equator and c
 ontraction of the posterior hemisphere. Laser abla
 tion is used to cut the cell sheet in order to det
 ermine the elastic properties in different regions
  and at different stages of inversion.
