DESCRIPTION:Many neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’
s disease or Parkinson’s disease are associated wi
th the gradual accumulation and characteristic spr
eading of pathological proteins. Mechanisms underl
ying the prion-like propagation of protein aggrega
tes remain\, however\, largely elusive. I will pre
sent our ongoing work using the nematode Caenorhab
ditis elegans as a model system to discover and ex
amine cellular pathways and factors that influence
the propagation and intercellular spreading of di
 sease-associated proteins (e.g.\, α-Synuclein) in
metazoans. A better understanding of these mechani
sms might eventually identify new druggable target
s for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
