DESCRIPTION:Anthropology is often defined as an inherently comparative dis
cipline. And yet anthropologists have historically had some trouble defini
ng and agreeing upon what might constitute their comparative method. This
talk examines the reasons for this seeming paradox\, and suggests some sol
utions. In the process it asks what if anything this situation tells us ab
out anthropology as a discipline and about comparison beyond anthropology.
