DESCRIPTION:Several proofs of the nonlinear stability of Minko
wski space already exist. These assume various app
roximate symmetries of the perturbed spacetime\, i
ncluding those generated by boosts and scaling\, s
o they need to be heavily modified before we can s
tudy the stability of black holes or other objects
. What's more\, it is unclear exactly how much the
se proofs rely on the structure of the Einstein va
cuum equations - could they be adapted to alternat
ive theories\, or cases involving matter?\n\nIn th
is talk I will present a new proof\, which avoids
assuming many of these approximate symmetries\, an
d can also be applied to a very broad class of equ
ations. I will also discuss an interesting phenome
non - formation of shock waves at infinity - encou
ntered during this work.
