DESCRIPTION:In this presentation we examine what it might mean
to be creative in the languages classroom. We rep
ort on an empirical project with school-age langua
ge students in the UK\, investigating the effects
of text type and teaching approach on learning out
comes and on attitudes. For many years younger lea
rners in the UK have been exposed to mainly transa
ctional language in which the figurative has been
stripped away. We were interested in seeing how le
arners reacted to different types of text\, includ
ing poetry\, and the outcomes when the learners we
re exposed to different teaching approaches\, some
of which aimed explicitly to prompt creative resp
onses. We present some of our findings\, including
those which suggest that the rate of vocabulary d
evelopment can be improved through creative approa
ches\, while attitudes towards language teaching\,
whether within a traditional or creative conditio
 n\, remain mixed.
