DESCRIPTION:Despite intensive research\, the so-called "Northw
est Semitic" family\,which includes Canaanite and
Aramaic\, continues to be an elusive concept. This
lecture will attempt to enrich historical-compara
tive approaches with ideas taken from dialect geog
raphy and sociolinguistics in order to depict the
 complex\nlinguistic map of ancient Syria-Palestine
. Rather than identifying features of "Northwest S
emitic" as such\, it will try to outline the proce
ss in which languages like Hebrew and Phoenician t
 ook shape over time.
