DESCRIPTION:Despite intensive research\, the so-called "Northwest Semitic"
family\,which includes Canaanite and Aramaic\, continues to be an elusive
concept. This lecture will attempt to enrich historical-comparative appro
aches with ideas taken from dialect geography and sociolinguistics in orde
r to depict the complex\nlinguistic map of ancient Syria-Palestine. Rather
than identifying features of "Northwest Semitic" as such\, it will try to
outline the process in which languages like Hebrew and Phoenician took sh
 ape over time.
