DESCRIPTION:*The problems infrastructure engineers face in des
igning for climate change*\n\nEngineers face consi
derable difficulty in dealing with the design and
operation of large strategic infrastructure in a v
ariable climate where the expectation is that floo
ding will in general become an increasing problem.
This will be an issue in many parts of the world
but the impact on the extremes of Drought and Floo
d may or may not occur in all countries at the sam
e time! Large Urban Areas are where most people li
ve and are directly in danger when extreme precipi
tation events occur. The key problem is that rainf
all is one of the more difficult variables in atmo
spheric science to both predict in terms of potent
ial climate change or to even measure. This is par
ticularly so in terms of the real-time operation o
f major infrastructure designed to keep us safe. T
he design of large complex and extremely expensive
urban drainage infrastructure is currently a prim
ary focus in terms of protecting citizens of major
Cities and attempting to mitigate the impact of e
xtreme flooding. This talk focuses on some of the
problems that Engineers face in relation to both u
nderstanding and modelling the impact of climate c
hange on extreme rainfall events and the technical
challenges that this presents in an uncertain env
 ironment.\n\n
