DESCRIPTION:This talk will highlight both the successes and th
e stumbling blocks along the way to bring material
science into the 21st century. Namely\, the combi
nation of (i) high throughput experiment\, (ii) ma
ssive computational resources\, (iii) machine lear
ning\, and (iv) high energy beamlines is more than
summative when conducted in concert. Given finite
human resources (ie graduate students)\, these to
ols serve as force multipliers to enhance their ca
pabilities. Over the last decade\, we have appli
ed these techniques in thermoelectric and photovol
taic materials. This high through-put search of k
nown and hypothetical compounds has led to the dis
covery of new classes of materials for these two a
pplications. Through the interplay of materials ph
ysics and machine learning\, general principles fo
r designing the next generation materials have eme
rged. The talk will conclude with discussion of th
e prospects for sequential learning coupled with p
arallelization and automation to accelerate functi
 onal materials discovery. \n\n
