DESCRIPTION:Following a celebrated conjecture of Keating and S
naith\, expressing elusive moments of the Riemann
zeta function on the critical line in terms of mom
ents of characteristic polynomials of Haar-distrib
uted matrices in U(N)\, much work has been devoted
to computing the averages of products and ratios
of characteristic polynomials of random matrices f
rom classical groups. We will present an elementa
ry and self-contained approach to this problem\, u
sing classical results due to Weyl and Littlewood\
, and will discuss some (provable) arithmetic appl
ications.
