DESCRIPTION:I will discuss a vanishing theorem for singular/etale cohomolo
 gy with Fp-coefficients as one takes the direct limit over the tower of Si
 egel modular varieties with Gamma_1(p^n)-level structure\, focusing on the
  geometry that goes into the proof. This is joint work with Caraiani\, Gul
 otta\, Hsu\, Mocz\, Reinecke and Shih.
