DESCRIPTION:Temperature and salinity fronts are important feat
ures in the open ocean and coastal and estuarine e
nvironments. These fronts can inhibit mixing of po
llutants and other tracers while enhancing the ver
tical exchange between surface and interior waters
. Fronts are also extremely energetic and dynamic
environments\, exhibiting a rich collection of flu
id dynamical processes on scales ranging from kilo
meters to meters. I will discuss recent work using
large-eddy simulations which indicates that front
s can significantly modify the intensity and spati
al structure of three-dimensional turbulence. I wi
ll then discuss the impact that fronts and turbule
nce can have on biology and the distribution and t
ransport of buoyant tracers near the ocean surface
 .
