DESCRIPTION:Mathematical models that predict the spread of inf
ectious diseases are an essential part of public h
ealth decisions for the introduction of new vaccin
es. These predictions use self-reported social con
tacts as a proxy for how likely people are to tran
smit infections through casual interactions. Howev
er\, the link between who people report having con
tact with and how they actually pick up infections
has never been tested. We are addressing this cru
cial public health question by recruiting school c
hildren as citizen scientists to collect social co
ntact and genomic data to estimate the transmissio
n of Staphylococcus aureus within a school environ
ment. In this talk\, citizen scientists from Cotte
nham Village College and St Bedes Inter-Church Sch
ool present their preliminary results including a
first estimate of the carriage and anti-microbial
resistance rates in British school age children of
this common\, but clinically important\, bacteria
