DESCRIPTION:Health Economics @ Cambridge are happy to present
Tray Brown for a seminar on model building within
Health Economics. Tray works at the Department of
Public Health and Primary Care\, University of Cam
bridge. The seminar will focus on the basis of Dis
crete Event Simulation (DES)\, a modelling techniq
ue that has become increasingly more used as indiv
idual patient characteristics are given a bigger p
lace within health economic evaluation. In this Se
minar\, Tray will share his experience as a model
developer\, using examples from his model on Syste
 mic Lupus Erythematosus.\n\n*Time:* 15:00-16:00 Mo
 nday 14th May 2018\n\n*Venue:* Large Seminar Room\
 , 1st Floor\, Institute of Public Health\, Univers
 ity Forvie Site\, Robinson Way\, Cambridge\n\nInfo
rmation about the seminar can also be found "here"
 y-brown/\n\n*About the seminar:*\n\nCohort models
are still used most frequently when building decis
ion models for cost-effectiveness analyses. These
model types suffer from a number of limitations in
cluding an inability to efficiently incorporate pa
tients’ histories and limited\, if any\, tracking
of patients’ attributes. These make cohort models
unsuited to accurately reflect the experiences of
patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) a
s the disease can manifest itself in different way
s in each patient and previous events effect futur
e event probabilities. This can be addressed by us
ing a discrete event simulation (DES)\, a model ty
pe growing in acceptance in health economics. This
talk will introduce the concepts of DES and illus
trate the steps involved in developing one by draw
ing from the researcher’s experience building DES
 decision model for SLE.\n\n*Tray Brown:*\n\nTray i
s a Research Methods Fellow working at the Departm
ent of Public Health and Primary Care\, University
of Cambridge. He is funded by the NIHR to develop
a decision model for treatments for systemic lupu
s erythematosus (SLE)\, which will be used to pred
ict the life-time cost-effectiveness of various no
vel treatments for SLE under development in Cambri
dge. He recently completed an MSc in Economic Eval
uation in Healthcare (with distinction) at City\,
University of London.\n\n*All welcome. Part of the
  HE@Cam seminars 2017/18 series.*\nFor any questio
