 ections on how engineering approaches can help ach
 ieve and sustain quality improvement locally and a
 cross a system\n\nQuality improvement has been a c
 ommon thread throughout my experience within the h
 ealth and social care systems.  I will describe my
  experiences in service and system redesign in bot
 h Canada and the UK\, and what I have learned. Tra
 nsformation programmes tend to encounter barriers\
 , both human and structural\, and I will discuss s
 trategies to address them using engineering approa
 ches. My employing organisation for the last 9 yea
 rs\, NELFT NHS Foundation Trust\, has embraced the
  QI programme and concepts as a form of Organisati
 on Development\, and to address gaps in quality. I
  will describe how that came about and why\, and t
 he challenges the programme is currently facing. M
 y recent programme of transformation work has invo
 lved broader change across the system (currently i
 mplementing an “Integrated Care System” or ICS in 
 Thurrock) and I will reflect on how engineering ap
 proaches\, in conjunction with addressing the huma
 n factor\, are assisting in achieving the vision.\
