DESCRIPTION:Openness can be used strategically to alter the st
atus quo\, disrupt ecosystems and technology incum
bents\, but there are questions as to the effectiv
eness\, extent\, timing and impact of open strateg
ies. This session will look into how open technolo
gies have changed ecosystems drawing on case studi
es in several sectors and also examine how emergin
g technologies such as the blockchain can themselv
es change modes and strategies for openness. \n \n
Readings and links to the online papers and group
annotations will be distributed by email\, please
contact synbio@hermes.cam.ac.uk to sign up for the
whole series or individual sessions.\nIt is stron
gly recommended that papers are read in advance of
the meetings.\n \nABOUT:\nThe guiding question of
our research group will be the extent to which op
en technologies result in equitable sharing of kno
wledge and cognitive or technology justice. 'Open'
IP describes a range of approaches to knowledge p
roduction\, distribution and consumption that allo
w more or different actors to participate in produ
cing and benefit from technologies. The global shi
ft to knowledge-based economies and increasingly r
apid pace of technological advancement means that
the question of how society deals with intellectua
l property (IP) and structures institutions and co
mmunities to manage and disseminate knowledge is c
ritically important to our future. Our choices wil
l reflect and shape our societal values\, practice
s and culture. Advocates of open and collaborative
approaches point to evidence of real social impac
t from but there is little published evidence and
any effects are heavily context dependent.
