Abstract
Assessment is inextricably linked to what is being learnt, and the ideal is for assessment to support students’ learning. But some assessments are accused of creating ‘negative washback’ and damaging learning. In this seminar we will look at the claims of the proponents of ‘assessment for learning’ and will ask how national, summative assessments can take their place alongside this.
