Kelly and Lawvere gave characterizations of essential inclusions of Grothendieck toposes in their joint paper of 1989 entitled ‘On the Complete Lattice of Essential Localizations’. They also established a duality between essential inclusions of presheaf toposes and idempotent ideals on the respective base category.

In the talk we shall see generalisations of their results. We shall analyse the case when the left adjoint of the inverse image functor is cartesian, and also the duality between cartesian essential inclusions of general Grothendieck toposes and specific idempotent profunctors.

This talk is part of the Category Theory Seminar series.
